Dan Shanks

Dan launched Consumer Marketing Consulting in 2006. He has over 20 years of experience in the credit card industry covering both Bank Card Issuing and Merchant Acquiring. He has held senior positions in the issuance and management of Visa, MasterCard and Private Label programs. His card experience is diverse and ranges from Finance and Operations to Marketing and Business Development. As Senior Vice President with Providian Financial (aquired by Washington Mutual), he was instrumental in growing the Co-Brand and Affinity Partnership business from it’s infancy to a $2 billion portfolio, accounting for 35% of all new accounts.
 
Prior to Providian (WaMu), Dan was Director of Credit Marketing for Limited Brands where he was responsible for acquisition and growth for the private label card programs of: Victoria’s Secret, Express, Structure, and The Limited. Previously with Household Credit Services, Dan was Senior Marketing Manager on two of the largest Co-Brand and Affinity credit card programs in the country:  The GM (General Motors) MasterCard and the AFL-CIO Union Plus affinity.

In the early 90’s, Dan was Assistant Vice President for Key Bank’s Merchant Acquiring business where he headed-up Finance and POS Equipment Operations for over 100,000 merchant acceptance locations and $3.5 billion in processed volume.

Dan earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Bowling Green State University in Ohio and a Master’s Degree from Thunderbird School of Global Management in Glendale, Arizona.


Dave Shaver

Dave joined Consumer Marketing Consulting as a Principal in 2009. Most recently Dave was responsible for business development activities which involved building partnerships to acquire new customers at Washington Mutual (acquired by JP Morgan Chase).  Dave secured new partnerships with major corporations like Twentieth Century Fox, ESPN, and PetSmart. He was responsible for negotiation of terms, financial review, contract negotiations, and development of marketing and sales strategy.

Prior to WaMu Dave spent 5 years at Schwab where he was responsible for managing the marketing and sales activity for Schwab's proprietary mutual fund products as well as third party mutual fund products sold through Schwab's channels.  Dave built strategic alliances with over 20 key mutual fund companies to partner on co-operative marketing and sales programs. Additionally, he was responsible for Retail Marketing at Schwab, leading marketing and promotion activities for 5 million retail customers.

 

Dave was the senior consumer marketing executive at BellSouth Telecommunications where he managed strategic market planning, product development/management, customer segmentation, marketing research, channel management, direct marketing, and advertising for 17 million customers.

 

Additionally, Dave has 10 years experience at American Express where he held multiple senior management positions in the U.S. and international markets.  As District Sales Manager, Dave managed the Card Merchant Sales team for Southern California.  As VP Card Acquisition he managed marketing programs responsible for acquiring over 1 million new cardholders per year.  Dave was also VP Platinum Card Operations where he managed the Customer Service, Credit, and Card Benefit operational staffs.  Finally, Dave served as VP GM for American Express in Singapore responsible for the full P/L for the Card, Travel, and Travelers Cheque businesses.

Dave earned an MBA in Marketing from the University of Southern California and a BA in Political Science from University of California at Berkeley.

Bernie Yu
Bernie joined Consumer Marketing Consulting as a Principal in 2009.  He brings with him a wealth of experience in starting, building and managing growth at multiple financial services and Internet companies.

 

Most recently, Bernie was Senior Vice-President with Washington Mutual Card Services (acquired by JP Morgan Chase) where he was responsible for growing and managing the co-brand/affinity credit card business.  There, Bernie had P&L responsibility and grew the business from inception to $2.5B in receivables, managing brand relationships such as ESPN, eBay, PayPal and Cabela’s.

 

Prior to WaMu, Bernie was Senior Vice-President of Marketing for MyPoints.com, a leading provider of Internet direct marketing and loyalty infrastructure.  There he led all marketing functions and grew the customer base ten-fold from under 1mm to 10mm customers, leading to a successful $50mm IPO and $210mm secondary offering.  MyPoints.com was one of the top 20 performing IPOs of 1999, and is now wholly-owned by United Online (NASDAQ: UNTD).

 

Prior to MyPoints.com, Bernie was one of the first marketers at the Disney Internet Group, a division of The Walt Disney Company.  Bernie was responsible for marketing one of the first, breakthrough online services for kids, as well as all associated customer relationship functions.

 

Bernie started his direct marketing career at American Express where he launched AmEx’s first stand-alone credit card as well as the Delta SkyMiles Card.  He held various positions in customer acquisition and relationship marketing.

 

Bernie holds an MBA from New York University’s Stern School of Business and a BS in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University.
